I run enforcer (and GA when needed), all the time, as I beta test Amiga
software, and I`ve never had SMB-Handler hang, or crash with MiamiDX,

Sure, its a bit rough, but it does the job.

I have the same problem. Not only was it not mounted but hard drive
toolbox couln't find it. In the end I've had to buy a new hard drive.

I was beta testing a defrag tool (No names no pack drill) and It
somehow screwed up my hd. If you think you can fix a SCSI III 4.3Gb
then let me know.

I'd even pay for it to be fixed - except I replaced it with a 9.1Gb
and cannot be bothered:-)

Not in 800x600 it doesn't, which is what I usually play Quake at.

However, due to some help from a recent posting, adding >NIL: makes
GLQuake a whole load more stable. As such, here are some fps values
for the like those that are interested.

 - actually the game uses a 480x360 screenmode
 - screen was 640x512 containing a 480x384 screen area
 - closest screen size was 640x512 in an 8 bit mode
     so that was used instead of 480x384

Sorry if the table looks odd.. It needs a proportional font to look
ok. Given that GLQuake has little or no optimisations (asm wise), it
is looking quite good.

Hi All,

I've previously posted of problems with Fusion. Well.. I still have
them ;)

I've tried peters hardfile, and fusion still crashes. It seems it may
be due to the rom I have (which is a 1Mb Quadra rom). At the moment,
the grey dithered screen is initialised, then the mouse pointer
freezes, and hangs the amiga.

I don't get as far as the happy mac boot logo, which according to the
docs is a problem with the rom. So I guess I'm stuck with SS after
all... which is a bit of a bummer. Can anyone tell me if IE4.01 works
under fusion, as it was unstable as anything with SS, and I had to
resert to Netscape Navigator 4.x (cant remember which one 4.5 i
think) instead.

Anyways, thanks for the help some people tried to provide.

What computer are you using? For GLQuake Timedemo 1 I get 11 fps using
a 200Mhz 040 603e in 640x480.

Gentlmen and ladies,
  Can someone tell why I get the following come up?

     Amiga Early Startup Control
 (press any key to toggle the display between NTSC & PAL)
    Bootup options
    Display options
    Expansion Board Diagnostic
    Boot                          Boot with no startup sequence
 This appears to be a random event.Also ,when this happens ,the mouse
becomes usless it justs jumps up and down on the left of the
screen,and cannot be moved to activate any of the above buttons.
My rodent is a "Punchinello" type from Power Computing.
  Can anyone explain why this happens,but above all what does it all
mean?

Umm, the laptop belongs to my dad's work, and they don't like software
getting installed on it. [I made Quake an exception :-) ]

I can probably uninstall simple programs again, but I get the feeling that
an FTP server may be more difficult.

I've tried this, but I'm finding the ixemul libraries difficult to set up
(They used to work, but I scrapped them with OS3.5, and I haven't
reinstalled them yet.)

Very simple...your mouse is defective...it's acting as if you have both
mouse buttons pressed. When you hold down both mouse buttons upon startup,
you get that screen.

Sounds like your mouse is screwed. Is it brand new? Can you try a true Amiga

I wouldn't be too worried about framerate differences...the running
speed of glQuake fluctuates hugely depending upon the size and detail
of the room you are in, anyway (which probably accounts for the value
you obtained).  I have recorded values of >40fps for some simple room
based demos, but it *certainly* doesn't run that fast on average.

Once the optimisations are complete, the author hopes to have the game
running at a constant 30fps on a 603e 200mhz in 640x480.  This will
include rewriting influential parts of the (wank) GL code.  Perhaps we
should wait until then?

R-Type really doesn't like anything other than a 68000. It's a lot
like Jimmy Whites Whirlind Snooker. They will work, if your 1200 has a
68000 in it.

Installers exist for the T1-3 and R-Type, but all need the Original
Disks, and not those supplied on Factor 5's homepage - since all the
ones they supply are cracked IIRC (well the T3 I got from there was)

I have successfully installed the Original T1 &2, and R-Type via
WHDLoad and/or JST, but like I said, those found on Factor5's page are
cracked and so cant be used that way - which means either use an
A500/600 or get PPC UAE ;)
(except PPC UAE sound emulation doesn't work too good - infact it
crashes everytime I try it)

Last month Eddie started a spendathon in which if you bought some
software you could win a prize=2E  It was all in aid of trying to get
people to part with some dosh to help the flagging software market=2E

seeing as I am the current spendathon winner I had a word with

Hi i use some ADF files which usually Crash , so i wrote a Floppy which
degrades the machine and it will run about 70-80 % of old amiga games,

I'm also using PFS2 with OS3.5, and I agree, it's nice not to have to
worry about IBrowse or Voyager crashing and invalidating your hard
disk. It's nice being able to retrieve files that have been deleted,
simply by copying them from the .deldir directory. It's nice to be able
to take advantage of larger hard disks (since before OS3.5) and to be
able to copy files *much* quicker than FFS can manage.

IIRC he didn't, but the plot of The Blue Lotus included a Japanese
attempt to invade mainland China (I think). Needless to say, Tintin and
Snowy saved the day and exposed the villians one of whom then
reportedly carried out said ritual suicide.

I agree freenetname sucks. I think I remember reading in their terms and
conditions that you can't just run a single page site that redirects to
other webspace. This makes sense as if you could then you would stop using
their shite service and they'd be hosting your domain completely free after
having paid to register it for you.

Check out http://uk2.net/ they do UK domains for 1.99 inc. web and email
forwarding. Don't take my word for it though, check the details for
yourself.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned here today...  BT Internet
are now offering (as of 1 March) 0800 calls on weekday evenings

I seem to recall AF doing a feature of Amiga around the world (large white
and red globe on the front cover, me thinks) a few years ago.  I`m sure
that included
some statistics, but what they were and how accurate they were I don`t
know.  Can`t find out myself cos that mag is stored in my mum and dad`s
house - one of the benefits of a smaller mag I suppose, storage is sooo
much easier.

I too have had no probs with OS3.5 and PFS2.  Or (mixing threads) with
backing up/restoring RDBs.  I read about these stability probs of v2 in the
PFS3 review too.  Are you (or anyone) able to give examples of bugs?  Are
there certain things I should avoid doing?

I did wonder whether they would be cack too. No such thing as a free (or
even nearly free) lunch. Glad I mentioned it here before I signed up for

Would someone please explain to me why exactly they think FreeNetName sucks?
I've been using them as my main ISP for a while now and I've got no
complaints - I get faster connections than with any other free ISP I've
tried, I can always connect first time and their mail servers have caused me
far fewer problems than any of the others I've tried, plus I've got a free
domain name.  Okay, so it'll cost a fortune if I want to move my domain
somewhere else, but why would I want to move it when it works perfectly well
where it is?

As far as I know, the only other way is with the standard Amiga
preferences utility. As for a manual, I don't think there was one - mine
had a small piece of folded card, with most of the documentation being on
the Welcome CD.

You should avoid keeping too many files in one directory, and you
should set the buffers on the partitions as high as you can. I had a
few problems after I first installed it... receiving "Alarme: Falsche
(something) ID!" errors, it write protected my hard disks and in the
end I was getting so many errors that I had to reformat. But that was
almost a year ago now, and I've not had any problems since.

I'm not saying that it is not a perfectly good solution for some people.
However, you are tied to them for the two years that they host your domain.
In six months when we are moving over to ADSL and cable modem connections
(hopefully) are you still going to be happy to dial in to freenetname and
upload your web stuff at analogue modem speed? Already some of us have
access to schemes such as SurfUnlimited. If you can use CableInternet
without paying per minute you aren't going to want to pay to upload your
webpages.

Okay then, here's why I think that:

I can't say I've had any trouble connecting to them, I have been happy with
the speed of connections and my website (http://www.amigazone.org.uk) has
always been online as far as I'm aware, I don't even particularly object to
having to go online with them for FTP access, after all they have to be
allowed to make some money somewhere after giving me a free domain. I would
be a lot happier if I could download my email from freenetname whilst
connected to another ISP, all the other accounts I have allow me to do this,
I was under the impression that it was a fairly significant part of the
appeal of email that you could access it from wherever you happen to be at
the time, through whatever ISP.

At the end of the day it's a matter of personal preference. Freenetname was
launched at exactly the right time with exactly the right advertising
campaign. At the time unmetered access was a faint hope for the future. They
managed to grab a decent slice of the market by giving away domains, thereby
tying customers to their service in a way that Freeserve and the like
cannot.

Over the next few months, as unmetered and broadband access become more
widespread, the free ISPs who make their money through a fraction of the
0845 charge are going to crap themselves. Suddenly just being free is not
enough. What gimmick can they come up with to keep people dialling in? Free
domains has been done, free calls has been done and why do you need them if
you're unmetered? Basically I see a widespread return to the days of a
monthly fee, however at least it'll only be one monthly fee without a phone
bill on top :)

Having just read through my explanation of why Freenetname are crap I have
to say it wasn't very good. Basically it's all just sour grapes on my part
since now that I'm on SurfUnlimited. I really wish I'd never signed up with
Freenetname, for what I will end up paying in phone charges to maintain my
website with them I could have registered the domain myself and tacked it
onto the hosting package I have for my other one. I will probably set up the
pages of my freenetname hosted site that need changing frequently on the
webspace where my masterspiece.com domain is (with Dreamhost, who I find
absolutely excellent, and cheap too) and just keep the static stuff on
freenetname, hopefully that will be enough to keep within their terms and
conditions.

I hope this clarifies my position somewhat, pardon my spelling and grammar,
it's very late and I'm half asleep.

Actually, yes, I'm quite happy to do that, but then I can hardly ever be
bothered to update my site.. ;)  Also, as I'm unlikely to be able to afford
ADSL or whatever, it's arrival isn't going to make much difference to me.  I
realise that my circumstances are probably different from most of the people
on here though...

As it stands, paying per minute is actually the cheapest option for me - my
internet access costs me an average of 20 per month in phone charges.  When
all the other charges are taken into account, it would actually cost me more
to have unmetered access than it does right now.

I agree on this point, that it's a hassle to have to connect to them just to
download your email, but unless that's your only email address there's no
reason why you have to actually use it for the majority of your email -
Freenetname have to make their money somewhere and I don't begrudge them the
5p or so it costs me to download a days emails.

They're not "giving away" domains - you get one in return for using their
service and thus making them some money.  Personally I'm quite happy with
that.  It's still cheaper than a lot of other options.

I agree entirely - the days of the free ISPs are numbered, although I'm sure
they'll survive for more than "the next few months".  It's going to take a
long time before everyone catches up with the latest advances in technology
and I'm sure there'll still be plenty of people still using their 33.6K
modems to dial in to their free ISP and paying by the minute in two years
time.

I only registered my domain name for the (mildly) amusing email address
because, having done a little research, I realised there might come a time
when it's easier (not to mention cheaper) to just dump the domain and forget
about it - if I'd had any intention of making serious use of it, I would've
gone to the trouble of doing it properly.

Not really - I pay 9.99 a month and get free access to my ISP 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week.  This is with Telewest's SurfUnlimited, in case you
didn't know.

Okay, you have to pay line rental too - same wit hteh BT line - and you
have to spend 10 on calls a month - we do anyway!  Looks like BT are
coming out with too little, too late ...

I could honestly say the same about my FFS partitions: my SFS Cache:
partition causes me MORE problems..

And if PFS2 is so good.. how come they released PFS3?

They ARE true. I read them in reviews, in letters columns in magazines
(replied to by respectable Amiga Mag People who say "yeah that's a =
nasty
quirk, but look at all the advantages you get for all that worry!")

You're right, it's easy for me to cite problems (I'll quote issue/page
numbers
and net articles if I can get the time to search) but then it's a lot =
harder
for people like YOU to prove that it IS entirely stable, because it's
purely anecdotal..

PFS3 is far from perfect. PFS2 is obviously not-so-perfect still. If =
you
feel
that you have to pay =A330 so that your machine can crash without =
worry,
you're tackling the wrong problem: WHY IS YOUR MACHINE CRASHING SO
BADLY THAT YOUR HARD DRIVE GETS SO DAMAGED?

But what of the domain? What if you want to get it professionally
hosted, or move across the world or something?

Then you'd have to pay FNN =A394 to get your domain moved, plus
any fees incurred by the new ISP/hoster for messing with the
databases and configuring servers.

Or you COULD have just paid someone like http://www.gradwell.com
=A310 for the domain and hosted it any damned where you like
forever (as long as you kept paying the =A310 a two-year or whatever)

What, that some dumbass Amiga programmer decided to use a
freakish method for data transfer? That it's a hacky, kludged
method designed before Windows was around? That Windows
doesn't try to support obselete 10 year old DOS software?

If you want to transfer data between a Windows PC and an Amiga
(using what we call a LapLink cable), you can simply install a
"direct cable connection" on the PC, use the PLIP protocol in Miami
and use telnet from the PC to open a shell on the Amiga via the
TCP device.

This is the early startup menu which is activated by holding the left and
right mouse buttons down when booting. It allows you to change various
things like in the bios of a pc, but not permenantly. Make sure all the
connections are tight, if not then this will happen

Hiys,
 I seem to have Java working on my amiga! But as I've not had an
opertunity to DL any programs for it, so I don't know how well it works.
I'm using kaffe version 0.71, so there's gonna be some missing bits, but
if anyone has immediate access to an amiga you might want to DL kaffe
from aminet plus some sort of java program, like a development
environment, and just see how well it runs.

Of course, it doesnt work with browsers cos of the <applet> tag, which
is a bummer.

Kaffe's been around for a long while now, but It's only a Shell version. No
GUI elements or systems exist for it as of yet, so most (99%) of web Applets
won't work (As they use the Java to display graphics dynamically). There
IS/WAS a development that did Java GUI's, but I can't remember what it is.
I know this coz I was trying to get ICQ for Java to work on my Amiga, A
futile exercise if ever there was one.

and you get even faster transfer rates with PC2Amigas custom cable.

btw, Sandy, wouldn't you get better performance for quake if you used
it's own null modem multiplayer option.

Hi Everyone,

Can you help me?  I am setting really pathetic download speeds with
my system.  I have an A1200 '040 25mhz, clock up card and an Ioblix
1200 serial card.
I seem to get speeds of about 1500cps?  Is there anyway of testing or
patching my system to get better speeds.  I am using a baud rate of
115200 (230400 unsteady!).

Also, using Genesis, it is difficult to set up.  I had to set up using
the serial port and then install the ioblix and software to get on line.

Are other cards like the twister faster?

I am really confused as it does seem really slow.

Any help?

between Microcode and Blittersoft -

Which Quadra did it come from; I have a Quadra 650 and 950.  The Quadra
800 ROM is also known to work.  Are you using an 060?

IE 4.01 will work on a 68K Macintosh; v4.5 and the soon to be released
5.0 are PPC only.  I don't use Netscape so I can't say.  However I have
found using IE 4.01 with FreePPP, and Mac OS 7.6.1 on the net to be
very reliable.  I'd agree that it's not very fast though! :)

If at all possible don't give up just yet.

He *is* still part of it (most of it really), but the reason for the
disappearance of that part of his page is all linked in to Fusion 3.4 being

Is it possable that you are not using the reboot patches supplied with
fusion.
PrepEmul as supplied with shapeshifter wont work for fusion.

Another possabilty is that the video drivers may not be the latest ones.
I had the same trouble as you upuntill updating to the latest drivers.

I would agree here to.  It's all well and good saying PCs suck and MS
stink and all the other stuff etc. but that does not justify why nor
does it represent constructive criticism.

In a debate to qualify why you dislike MS (if you do), you need to, I
hate MS because and give a justified answer.  Amiga owners themselves
get peeved if someone simply says 'Amigas are crap', PC owners are the
same.  You need to justify why you use an Amiga and why you dislike the
PC, simply saying 'they're crap' is derogatory and the key way to loose
an argument.

Indeed it's fair to criticise anything, so long as it remains relevant
and has a good justified reason.  I'd say there are three types of
Amigan: those who are anti-PC full stop, liberal Amigans who see the
merits of other systems, and those who are pro all systems to a certain
extent.  I'd say I'm in the middle.  I would dearly love to see
(something not as quirky or cumbersome though) something of Word and
Excel's calibre on the Amiga.  Perhaps my Platinum Suite 2000 is some
way there already?  I dunno.

 Does the mouse have a switch on the base, to switch it between
Amiga and ST??? (Atari) My wizard mouse has this and sometimes
it works over and causes the jittery pointer.

Unfortunately BT have a monopoly round our way, I haven't heard of any
other telecom/cable company fighting for business in rural Scotland.
This is a great shame indeed as we have a lot to gain from cheap
Internet access :-(

Actually, the railway incident was based on the actual events at Mukden
which, as covered in the book, resulted in the first stage of the
Japanese invasion of China.  Tintin and Snowy, on the other hand, foiled
a gang of opium dealers who just happened to use connections within the
Japanese presence in Shanghai to, well, try and kill Tintin.  Hmm.

OK, Tintin's faint Amiga link:  Tintin, created by Herge, who took an
interest in modern art to the extent of having his portrait painted by
Andy Warhol, who (as reported in my A600 WWW special edition AF) was
involved in the launch of the A1000(?) and apparently loved Amigas.

There, nothing to do with the new Amiga website, though I'm sure they
could draw inspiration from either of the great artists.

I have the opportunity to get hold of a 17" Mac monitor for =A370. My
reservations are:

Can I use this monitor with my 1200T (without graphics card or
scandoubler, my money was tied up waiting for a G4, grrr)?

Is it a good deal? I don't know how good Mac monitors are.

The guy I spoke to seemed to indicate that there were more of these
deals available, so anyone in Reading who wants to get in on it,
they're called Studio Box, in Ross Road, just off the road to Caversham
after TGI Fridays.

Depends on what model it is!
If one of the early ones then it will be a fixed frequency one. If one of
the later ones then they are SVGA monitors with different connectors fitted.

There a company call PCJen who sell them for 40.

It's strange - if it isn't mainstream make or has the Apple or CBM logo on -
shops panic and sell them cheap 'cos they don't know what they are :)

Get the model number and I will tell you it's specs (or where to look)

.. it depends which Mac monitor. Most are bloody good, some are
notoriously quirky. Find out what model it is.. then check Apple's
website (or the manufacturer's website) for details. Ask which
cable it has on it, if you DO need to get an adapter it'll be from
any one of 5 or 6 Mac connectors to PC 15-pin VGA which you
can then buy a cheapo 15-Amiga-ish connector from Eyetech..

Actually, I got an "Apple Multiple Scan 15" at home, and it's a =
FANTASTIC
monitor! Also, if you unscrew the lead on the back, you'll find a =
standard
VGA plug... Very handy!

If it is one of the "Multiple Scan" Models, It'll sync down to 15Khz, =
too,
Perfect for the Amiga.=20
Failing that, check out your local School or College and see if they =
have
any Acorn A5000/RISC PC Displays going. Full Multisync displays going =
down
to 15Khz, and work like a Dream on Every screenmode you care to throw =
at it.
Pin-sharp display, too and you get a fast machine into the process. I =
picked
up 3 of them from my old College for =A330 a-piece!

I'vew got a directory withn 7000 files, I know of people that have over
20,000 files in a POFS directory. It doesn't cause a problem with
anything but speed of access to that directory.

The write protection is temporary. It's a safety feature of PFS, as soon
as it detects an error on a partition it makes it read-only, to prevent
further damage. A reboot usually cures the fault., consistent errors are
usually a sign of an incorrect Mask or MaxTransfer.

Having said all that, PFS2 did have some problems, but only a very few
considering the hammering my hard drives get. FFS is far more prone to
problems.

PFS3.3 appears to have fixed all outstanding bugs.

Okay. We have the final release of Personal Paint on this CD. It's version
7.1b, which is newer than any version previously commercially available
(although you could patch your existing 7.1 installation to 7.1b with the
patch from Aminet). It takes up about 70M of space on the CD thanks to full
documentation in three languages and a bunch of example pics and anims.

*grin*  I was right, it is something I've bought!  I admit it was
an upgrade from when AF had v6, but still ...    ;-)

However, it's a great package which I hope that people appreciate being on
there.  Given all of the example stuff too, it should make a very nice CD!

Yeas, I'll second that, should come in great use now that DPaint is
incompatible with my gfx. card; and I have only got PPaint 7.0.  Thanks
once again Ben.  One thing however; it leaves a sour taste in my mouth-
does this mean that Cloanto's plan of having PPaint 8 is scrapped and
that PPaint 7.1b is as far as this goes?  I guess you paid them about
=A3900 for it then?  =A330x30; since you said iirc that you paid them an
amount to the value of 30 copies sold.

Well looks like my next program plan is thus: a killer pain package in
the authenticity of DPaint and PPaint.  Just gotta finish PS2k first...
:)

And I have to figure out a gradient fill algoritm, what needs to be
done... :)
And I'll program it in C, perhaps I'll get an Amiga dev system when
they're released and program it for Elate.... :)

Amiga development in a bid to get them working on miggy software again?

By the time you finish PS2K there'll be no Amiga left :) Where are those
graphics you were going to send me, too?

I used to have an Apple Multiple Scan 14" (really 13") and Mac monitors
indeed generally have extremely good display quality.  And indeed
worked a dream at 15KHz too.  Well until it blew up... :)

contrary, bl**dy excellent!), but because it means no further
development for PPaint, or any new programs from Cloanto. I assume this
means that they are no longer interested in the Amiga market, or are
interested but can't afford to stay?

I think the latter would be a better description. Funnily enough, they
actually like to get paid for their work... :)

i am using an Ioblix with an ISDN line.. i'm getting speeds in excess of
8000cps on a 6400cps line..

i'm using the same processor.. i don't seem to be experience any
difficulties at all..

i found Genesis very easy to set up.. just select the relevant drvier from
the the DEVS: drawer and give it a GENERIC command set.. if your using ISDN
too, it may help to modify the INIT line with ATB4<CR>
